Background of the Study
Nigerian news reporting is a critical component of the media landscape, serving to inform, educate, and shape public opinion. Semantic precision—the exactness of meaning conveyed through language—is essential for accurate reporting. This study examines the differences in semantic precision between print and digital media in Nigerian news reporting. Print media, with its established editorial processes, often emphasizes accuracy and formality, while digital platforms provide immediacy and brevity, sometimes at the expense of detailed semantic clarity (Udo, 2023). The research investigates how journalists navigate language choices to balance speed with accuracy and whether digital innovations have led to new conventions in meaning construction. In-depth analysis of lexical choices, contextual cues, and headline constructions will shed light on how semantic precision is maintained or compromised across these media. The study also considers the impact of audience expectations and the economic pressures faced by media organizations, as these factors can drive shifts in linguistic practices (Nwosu, 2024). Ultimately, by comparing the two mediums, the research aims to contribute to the broader understanding of language use in journalism and its implications for public discourse (Ike, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of semantic precision in news reporting, there is a notable gap in comparative research examining print versus digital media in Nigeria. While print outlets are traditionally lauded for their commitment to language accuracy, digital platforms often prioritize rapid dissemination, potentially leading to semantic ambiguities (Udo, 2023). This divergence raises concerns about the quality and clarity of information reaching the public. In addition, the evolving nature of digital media and its impact on editorial standards have not been sufficiently scrutinized, leaving unanswered questions regarding the long-term implications for journalistic integrity (Nwosu, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by systematically comparing the semantic strategies used in both formats to determine how they affect public understanding and trust (Ike, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To compare semantic precision in Nigerian print and digital news reporting.

  2. To identify factors influencing language accuracy in both mediums.

  3. To propose recommendations for improving semantic clarity in digital journalism.

Research Questions:

  1. How does semantic precision differ between print and digital Nigerian news?

  2. What factors contribute to these differences in language use?

  3. How can semantic clarity be enhanced in digital media reporting?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a critical comparison of semantic precision in Nigerian news reporting across print and digital media. By highlighting the linguistic challenges and advantages inherent in each format, the research informs best practices for journalistic language use. The findings are expected to guide media practitioners, editors, and policymakers toward strategies that enhance clarity and trust in news dissemination. This comparative approach contributes to the broader discourse on media integrity and public communication (Ike, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing semantic precision in Nigerian news reporting as observed in selected print and digital media sources. It does not extend to broadcast or social media platforms, and data are based on a specific set of news articles.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Semantic Precision: The degree of accuracy and clarity in the meaning of language.

  • Print Media: Traditional newspapers and magazines that undergo rigorous editorial review.

  • Digital Media: Online news platforms that prioritize speed and accessibility.
